The game is currently planned for release on the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. A release date has not yet been stated.
A brief announcement trailer was revealed, although it provided few details outside of the fact that the game itself exists, which platforms it will be available for, and what studio is behind it.
The trailer’s description also makes a brief mention of an added multiplayer mode, though no specific details were given.
The game is being developed by the relatively new developer, Purple Lamp Studios. A Vienna-based developer, Purple Lamp Studios consists of a team of over 40 veteran staff members from different studios including EA, Ubisoft, Gameloft, and Sony.
The studio was previously responsible for The Guild 3, which was a middle-ages-based life and trade simulation game.
The original SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is often regarded as both one of the best licensed video games of all time, as well as possibly one of the best 3D platformers ever made.
It had players take control of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy as they explore numerous lovingly-recreated and show-accurate locations in order to collect countless shiny objects and Golden Spatulas in an effort to defeat Plankton’s out of control robot army.
The game received mixed reviews upon its initial release, but went on to become a best seller on multiple platforms. It also gained a growing cult following over the years, which has now lead to this full-on remake becoming a reality.
Seeing how beloved the original game was and still is today, both Purple Lamp Studios and Rehydrated itself have some big, squeaky shoes to fill.
